In The Era Of The Connected Camera, The Point & Shoot Commits Seppuku
Why haven't Point & Shoot or DSLR cameras incorporated GPS like my iPhone has?
My high-end Nikon P6000 Point & Shoot had GPS, but the replacement P7000 model dropped it - perhaps because it did not work very reliably.
None of the off-the-shelf Nikon or Canon SLRs incorporate GPS - what's wrong with these companies - don't they get it?

HOME, is one of the most important videos you will ever watch regarding the future of mankind.
man's impact on Earth is relatively recent in geologic time, yet the magnitude of our impact is stunning as seen from this perspective.
http://goodplanet.org/ Home Project http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Home_%282009_film%29
The narration and video quality matches any National Geographic title to date.
Home is a 2009 documentary by Yann Arthus-Bertrand. The film is almost entirely composed of aerial shots of various places on Earth. It shows the diversity of life on Earth and how humanity is threatening the ecological balance of the planet. The movie was released simultaneously on June 5, 2009 in cinemas across the globe, on DVD, Blu-ray, television, and on YouTube, opening in 181 countries.
The film was financed by PPR, a French multinational holding company specializing in retail shops and luxury brands, as part of their PR strategy.
Every thinking person will want to see this video, and tell the next person about it.
The documentary chronicles the present day state of the Earth, its climate and how we as the dominant species have long-term repercussions on its future. A theme expressed throughout the documentary is that of linkage—how all organisms and the Earth are linked in a "delicate but crucial" natural balance with each other, and how no organism can be self-sufficient.
To promote the documentary online, a YouTube channel known as "HomeProject" was created.
Copyright info.: Although the movie is formally under a Creative Commons license[citation needed], it has no official copyright. Yann Arthus-Bertrand emphasized in a TED talk [10] that the movie has no copyright: "This film have [sic] no copyright. On the fifth of June, the environmental day, everyone can download the movie on Internet. The film is given for free to the distributor for TV and theater to show it the five of June. There is no business on this movie. It is available for schools, cities, NGOs and you." This means the film can be distributed, copied, uploaded, burned to DVD, etc., without restrictions if not altered or edited. ClearBits, an online digital media community, provides a torrent of the 93-minute version in high-definition mp4 format.
The film received a large response upon release, receiving over 400,000 combined views within the first 24 hours on YouTube.[citation needed] As of April 2010, the French, English, German, Spanish, Russian and Arabic versions on Youtube logged a total of more than 14 million views. It was shown to high ratings on channels around the world including the international network National Geographic.

Op-Ed Contributor - How to End the Great Recession - NYTimes.com
This is one of the most clear explanations of the financial mess that we are in, and how to get out of it...
The author ROBERT B. REICH says "In the late 1970s, the richest 1 percent of American families took in about 9 percent of the nation’s total income; by 2007, the top 1 percent took in 23.5 percent of total income. "..."Policies that generate more widely shared prosperity lead to stronger and more sustainable economic growth — and that’s good for everyone. The rich are better off with a smaller percentage of a fast-growing economy than a larger share of an economy that’s barely moving. That’s the Labor Day lesson we learned decades ago; until we remember it again, we’ll be stuck in the Great Recession."

No value
Your recent story about the $350 million runabout of 38-year-old Russian multibillionaire Andrey Melnichenko seemed disproportionate and revulsive to me in context to the humanitarian crisis in Pakistan, where millions are homeless and hungry (“Billionaire in Morro Bay,” Aug. 18). Despite a net worth of $4.4 billion, Melnichenko has no value.

I've been looking at the Canon 800mm lens.'
Canon says "This is the longest telephoto lens among Canon's lineup, and a terrific choice for any long-distance application-outdoor sports, wildlife, news photojournalism, and so on. It's actually lighter than Canon's EF 600mm f/4L IS lens, weighing just under 10 lbs. It uses a refined optical design, with two fluorite lens elements, one UD element, and one Super-UD-glass element, for outstanding correction of color fringing and superb contrast and sharpness. This super-telephoto lens uses magnesium-alloy barrel construction to enhance its light weight, and has weather-resistant gaskets throughout for use in harsh conditions. It's compatible with both the EF 1.4x II and 2x II tele extenders for even more reach: EOS cameras with 45 AF points will continue to provide autofocus at the center AF point when the lens is used with the 1.4x extender. Finally, it's image stabilized, providing up to 4 stops of correction for camera shake. This makes it even more practical in many situations."
Art Morris of "Birds as Art" seems to have adopted this lens as his main tool for bird photography. I'm surprised not to have ever seen one of these lenses in Morro Bay, CA, where 500mm and 600mm Canon lenses are frequent.

2-Way Sync - Google Calendar (Gcalendar/Gcal) and iPhone
I'm using Spanning Sync to achieve this integration between Google Calendar and iPhone , as suggested in this article.
http://spanningsync.com/ says: Spanning Sync 3 is the one app that syncs both iCal with Google Calendar and (Mac) Address Book with Google Contacts. It gives you even better control over how your information syncs, and is now up to 10x faster!
Two-Way Sync between Gcal & iPhone
It can be done, and I've tested it! These instructions are for an iCal-enabled computer (specifically a Mac). It does require:
- MobileMe ($70 if you get it with a new iPhone, $100 otherwise; or $120/150 for a family plan, for 5 people) - this syncs your iPhone to iCal
- Spanning Sync - syncs your Google Calendar(s) to iCal
I suspect Google will eventually come up with an iPhone App to replace Spanning Sync, but MobileMe will most certainly be an essential part of the equation.
Introduction to Google Calendar Sync - Google Calendar Help
says:
Google Calendar Sync allows you to sync events between Google Calendar and Microsoft Outlook Calendar. You'll be able to determine the direction of information flow, as well as the sync frequency. Staying on top of your Google Calendar and Microsoft Outlook Calendar events has never been easier! Here's some good information to know to help you get started with Google Calendar Sync.
Compatibility
Currently, Google Calendar Sync is only compatible with Microsoft Outlook versions 2003 and 2007, and operating systems Windows XP and Windows Vista.
Windows XP 64-bit Edition is not compatible with Google Calendar Sync at this timeWe understand that many people like to stay connected with various calendar applications. Unfortunately, it's not recommended to use Google Calendar Sync when using third-party sync applications* that sync between Microsoft Outlook and Google Calendar. Please be aware that doing so may result in duplicated events or deleted data.
[*Spanning Sync and Busy Sync users beware]

SurferMag Message Boards: Drama in Morro Bay (Chris Ward/Coast Guard/Capsize related)
Updated: Feb 13, 2010 7:13 PM

Some scary moments in Morro Bay Saturday when large waves caused a Coast Guard boat to flip.
Witnesses say the Coast Guard cutter was towing a skiff boat back to shore when it got stuck in some large wave sets.
The strong waves then flipped the cutter with three of the skiff passengers on board.
'Basically they ran down the face, hit the trough, the bow just started submerging in the trough of the wave and the stern just completely came over the bow,' said Ray Savoie, who witnessed the incident. 'I mean they did a full forward flip with a half roll.'
'We came up, we righted ourselves, and my friends were gone, they were gone,' said David Langer, who was a passenger on the skiff boat. 'I looked and there they were in the ocean looking up.'
No one was hurt but the Coast Guard cutter was damaged in the incident.
The passengers on the skiff boat say they take full responsibility for what happened because they should not have been out on the water, in the skiff boat, in the first place."

Is the iPad a Child’s Best Friend? - Gadgetwise Blog - NYTimes.com
Here is just one more piece of evidence that Apple's iPad announced Jan 2010 will become a major new platform - with all or more of the impact of the iPod, iTouch, iPhone, iMac, MacBook lines. My Mom, aged 98 this year, will be the recipient of one of the first of these iPad platforms - what does that say? No more newspaper ink stains, to say the least.
